Along with political and economic relations, cultural relations – including education and sports – are one of the three cornerstones of German foreign policy. The cultural ties between Germany and Uganda are diverse and lively.
Along with political and economic relations, cultural relations – including education and sport – are one of the three cornerstones of German foreign policy and have, moreover, a demonstrably long-term impact. The main focus is on academic exchanges, support for schools abroad and activities geared to promoting interest in the German language as well as intercultural dialogue.

Academic Exchanges
Academic exchanges between Uganda and Germany are an important focus of German-Ugandan cultural relations. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) grants scholarships to Ugandan students and academics to carry out their studies or research in Germany, Uganda or an African third-country and further promotes the cooperation between German and Ugandan universities through various programmes. Since 1967, a DAAD Representative supports its implementation who is as well a senior lecturer at Makerere University where German studies is taught since over 50 years.
Promotion of German Language
German is the most widely spoken language in Europe and over 100 million people call it their native language. Nearly 15 million people speak and learn German as a foreign language worldwide.
Therefore another focus of Germany’s commitment within the cultural field is the promotion of the German language in Uganda. For more than 40 years German language has been part of the academic curriculum at Ugandan schools. Ever since, the number of Ugandan schools teaching German as a subject has risen to 9 schools and currently more than 5000 Ugandan students have the German language in their academic curriculum. Ugandan schools offering German language to their students benefit from a number of promotion programmes and individual measures funded by the Federal Foreign Office.

Cultural Programme
The cultural programme by the German Embassy and the Goethe-Zentrum Kampala/German Ugandan Cultural Society (GZK/UGCS) contributes to a lively and multi-faceted cultural exchange. Through its cultural fund the Embassy supports a broad range of music-, theatre-, and art- projects and further promotes major cultural projects within the country. The Goethe-Zentrum Kampala plays a central role in not only promoting the study of German abroad but also in enouraging intercultural exchange through an extensive programme of cultural events throughout the year such as exhibitions, movie screenings, concerts, lectures and workshops.
Sport Cooperation
Another focus of German involvement in the cultural sector is the long-standing successful cooperation in the field of sports. Germany has been supporting Ugandan sports actively for more than four decades with 2 long term and over 30 short term projects as well as donations of sport material and equipment for local sport clubs and almost 50 schools.
