Deutsche Welle's new TV Service went on air on June 22, 2015.

DW's new TV programming presents more detailed news and deeper analysis. Unique regional expertise heightens coverage, and international viewers can join the conversation with a new interactive program, DW News.

Deutsche Welle's five newly structured TV channels include:

  • DW in English
  • DW (Latinoamérica) in Spanish
  • DW (Deutsch), with German-language programming for Asia
  • DW (Amerika) with 20 hours of German-language programming and four hours of programming in English
  • and DW (Arabia), now with 24 hours of programming in Arabic.

For the first time, DW's TV programming is also available in Europe via Astra satellite.

“The overwhelming majority of our audience members take advantage of our many foreign languages on offer, but English is by far the frontrunner,” says DW Director General Peter Limbourg, explaining the decision to revamp DW's programming. “That is why we're expanding our English-language content by adding a news and information program, DW News.”

The new format provides more in-depth information and background analysis, with expert knowledge to shed light on issues that affect people around the world. Coverage includes politics and culture, business and finance, science and sports. There will also be regular, detailed reporting on social media topics. DW News in English provides the information people need to know – faster than ever before.

On June 22, 2015, Deutsche Welle started broadcasting its German-language news program “DW Nachrichten” around the clock. Straight from the DW newsroom in Berlin it includes news updates, feature reports and spotlight interviews in compact three-minute editions, as well as in more detailed 15-minute and half-hour editions. During regional prime time slots the news shows will present a thematic focus tailored to the respective international target audiences. DW's channels in Spanish and Arabic will report on the major events of the day and highlight topics and stories of local interest.

From Monday to Friday at 14:00 UTC and 18:00 UTC, there is two hour-long editions of DW News with a thematic focus especially targeted to audiences in Asia and Africa. Viewers can watch moving stories not to be found anywhere else, meet captivating personalities up close, and gain fascinating insight from reporting that delves well beyond the usual headlines.

“We've also upgraded our TV programming in German, Spanish and Arabic,” adds Limbourg. “The shows will be broadcast from new studios in Berlin, and by recently signing contracts for new satellite channels, we've also greatly increased the reach of our German-language programming.”
