On 30th September German Ambassador, Matthias Schauer, flagged off lorries carrying PPE to health care centers in bordering areas belonging to the network of health care facilities under the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau (UCMB). The German Embassy has provided Euro 100,000 to procure PPEs for 55 lower level health facilities (HCC III and HCC IV) in 8 dioceses in border areas (Arua, Hoima, Kabale, Kotido, Masaka, Mbarara, Moroto and Tororo). This support is aimed to enhance the preparedness and response capacity of the health facilities to handle patients with infectious diseases including SARS-CoV-2 virus disease (COVID-19), contain further spread of the infection and ensure continuation of health services provided by these facilities.
The project is part of UCMB response to the Covid-19 pandemic in Uganda which is delivered in coordination with the Ministry of Health and in line with their overall response framework to the Covid-19 Pandemic in Uganda. The delivery of the PPE equipment will go hand in hand with training of health care workers in infection prevention and control. This is expected to protect the health care works and their families and contribute to limit the further spread of Covid-19 in the communities. UCMB has prioritized health care facilities in bordering areas which are hot spots in regard to transmission from surrounding countries. This is particularly important in light of the recent announcement of the Ugandan government to open their borders.
